I was looking for a more cost effective solution for my Sonic than the dealer, and this was it. The dealer wanted $45 for a key and FOB, basically $110 for a replacement.
The most difficult part about going this route was finding someone willing to cut the aftermarket blank. In a major metro area one should not have problems finding a qualified locksmith, right? Not, the case. Dealer refused to cut the after market blank, wanting me instead to "keep that great GM feeling with overpriced GM parts" made in Mexico. Most all the other locksmiths I called were mobile locksmiths, gear toward emergency services who wanted $165-$180 to come over and cut my blank...Ouch! I finally found one locksmith with an actual store front, a chain, A-1 Locksmith. Got charged $40 for 5 minutes work, a bit high, but more cost effective than any other option I found. Once I got it in and unlocked the ignition switched unlocked, it took seconds to program and has been working flawlessly since!
